Here's an edging that works well with items that were made using the Somerset Stitch. The first two rows of this edging are based on the Crazy Shell Stitch, with the stitches slanted one way, then slanted in the other direction on the next row, for an interesting look.

This pattern uses shells and is similar to a solid shell design except that one part of this Somerset stitch pattern is worked in the space between two double crochet posts (my photo showing how this is done can be helpful, if you're not already familiar with that technique). This stitch pattern was originally from a year 1917 crochet pattern book but I've rewritten and added to the antique pattern directions so you can give the Somerset Stitch a try using modern crochet pattern terms. I've also included the authentic 1917 pattern, if you would like to compare the modern directions versus the antique directions. On another page on my site, I have a free pattern for a
Somerset Leaf Swirls Afghan that uses the Somerset shell stitch within the afghan design.
