The example on the right shows this chart worked in cross-stitch on a thread crocheted background. I crocheted the background with size 10 cotton thread and did the cross-stitch in size 10 thread also, reading the chart as: one square on the chart equals one single crochet stitch.

If working the chart in filet crochet:
Starting Chain (for a 4 double crochet mesh): Chain 40, plus
chain 3 (which counts as first dc of first row), plus chain 2 (for the ch-2 of first open mesh),
for a total starting chain of 45 chains.
To form first open mesh, dc in 9th chain from hook. Starting at
bottom right-hand side, follow chart.

Cotton Thread Size 5:
With US Size 4 Steel Crochet Hook, 3.6" x 3.2"
Cotton Thread Size 10:
With US Size 7 Steel Crochet Hook, 3.0" x 2.5"
Cotton Thread Size 20:
With US Size 9 Steel Crochet Hook, 2.9" x 2.4"
Cotton Thread Size 30:
With US Size 11 Steel Crochet Hook, 2.7" x 2.3"
Fingering/Baby Weight Yarn:
With US Size F Crochet Hook, 9.1" x 7.2"
Sport Weight Yarn:
With US Size G Crochet Hook, 10.4" x 8.2"
Worsted Weight Yarn:
With US Size I Crochet Hook, 11.7" x 9.2"
